The Veolia Orchard program is about to begin its second year. During that time, the business intends to donate approximately 600 fruit trees and 800 strawberry seedlings to schools that either do not have access to green spaces or have space limitations. This development will result in building of 190 additional schools as a direct consequence of the outstanding support provided by 22 different local authorities.
To ensure these plants have somewhere to call home, Tesco contributes recycled soft plastic pots to the project. These planters were brought in from outside sources by consumers who purchased them elsewhere. These planters will help to contribute around 7.3 tons of materials to the recycling process. Some of these items include bread bags, carrier bags, and pasta packets, among other things. In November, Grow at Brigade, an authority on the care of organic plants will deliver strawberry plants, apple trees, and pear trees to the winning schools. Grow at Brigade is a company specializing in the upkeep of organic plants. This will provide the plants and trees in the United Kingdom with the best possible chance of surviving the harsh winter weather there. The Regrow service offered by Veolia will supply the peat-free compost that will be used to fill these planters.
The Veolia Orchard is an educational endeavor component of Veolia’s program for Sustainable Schools. This program educates young people, particularly children, on the significance of taking steps to protect the natural world. Tesco’s Stronger Starts program aims to promote children’s mental and physical health by encouraging them to eat more healthfully, learn new things, and participate in activities that keep them moving around.
Pascal Hauret, Managing Director, Municipal at Veolia said: “Improving air quality around schools, engaging pupils on the power of plants and finding innovative recycling solutions which contribute the greatest benefit to the communities we serve is all part of our purpose to deliver ecological transformation. Considering we only launched Veolia Orchard last year, we are delighted at how popular the campaign is with schools and are thrilled to be supporting nearly double the amount we did in 2022.”
