Microsoft launches its Open AI offensive against Google.

For many people, Google is synonymous with internet search because it has long dominated this field. Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, was never able to compete on a significant level. Google had just under 93% of the global market share for Internet searches, while Bing only had 3%, according to market research firm Statcounter.

Microsoft is currently doing something new in the hopes that artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to a breakthrough, and the partner Open AI should assist with this as ChatGPT has been making waves with its AI language model for weeks. The software company unveiled a new version of its search engine, which utilises a ChatGPT variation, at its headquarters not far from Seattle. According to Microsoft, this technology is more potent than ChatGPT and designed exclusively for web searches.

At the occasion, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella predicted that artificial intelligence (AI) technology would revolutionise practically every software category and heralded a “new day for internet search.” Sam Altman, the CEO of Open AI, invoked the “beginning of a new age” when he heard similar epochal tones. It was Altman’s most significant appearance since ChatGPT’s late November release.

Microsoft’s criticism of modern search engines as antiquated and insufficient might be interpreted as a shot at Google. More than half of the ten billion search queries that are made every day are thought to go unanswered, and the fundamentals of search and the user experience have not evolved for many years.

Microsoft describes the updated Bing as “an AI-powered co-pilot for the Internet.” There will be many applications for AI. On the one hand, search queries should also contain unique responses from the language model in addition to conventional results. For instance, when asked how to substitute other ingredients for eggs in a cake. Then Bing would directly show consumers step-by-step instructions without making users first navigate through a number of different search results.

On the other hand, there is an interactive chat feature that is meant for questions that are more involved. For instance, whether a specific piece of furniture might be transported using a particular brand of car or in accordance with specific travel routes.

The new Bing search engine is immediately accessible, but it is only a “limited preview,” which means that users may currently only conduct a certain number of searches. You can join a waiting list for the complete variant. The new search engine will initially only be accessible via personal computers, although a mobile version is in the works.

Microsoft also unveiled an updated version of Edge, its web browser, which has AI features. Users can post entries on the LinkedIn careers network or summarise financial information in a different window, for instance.

Microsoft first formed a partnership with Open AI in 2019, investing $1 billion at the time. The business recently disclosed another billion-euro investment. Microsoft has stated that it intends to include Open AI software into every aspect of its product line, which includes both consumer and commercial options.
