Gianni Cavalieri has been appointed president of DESPAR Italia.
On December 20, 2022, the Board of Directors appointed Gianni Cavalieri, CEO of DESPAR Sicilia, to serve as President of DESPAR Italia. Gianni Cavalieri has served as the national consortium’s chairman since 2012. DESPAR Italia operates 1,374 DESPAR, EUROSPAR, and INTERSPAR stores across 17 Italian regions.
Former President Paul Klotz, who has served as President since 2016, will continue to collaborate with Gianni Cavalieri in his new capacity as Vice President. Cavalieri was promoted to this position earlier this year.
This adjustment was made by Paul Klotz because he had work commitments in Europe after he was appointed to the SPAR Austria Board of Directors. As a result of the significant impact he has had on DESPAR Italia’s growth, consolidation, and reputation for excellence, he continues to serve on the Board of Directors.
The DESPAR Italia Board of Directors recently welcomed two new members in the wake of the organization’s transition into a limited liability consortium company on August 1, 2022. Pippo Cannillo (DESPAR Centro Sud), Fabrizio Colombo (DESPAR Sardinia),
and Toni Fiorino (DESPAR Messina) have been joined by two new directors, Marco Fuso (DESPAR North West) and Francesco Montalvo (DESPAR North East), bringing the total number of directors on the board to six.
President Cavalieri made the following statement regarding his new role when asked about it:
“My appointment does not change in any way the positive balances achieved.” I am in favor of greater and closer synergies between the companies that make up the consortium in order to support the development of the DESPAR consortium as well as the continued growth of our own brands with the goal of increasing customer satisfaction.
DESPAR Italia is cited as the source.

About SPAR Italy
SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, was first granted the SPAR brand’s license in 1959. The first store opened in 1960.
making SPAR the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in the country. In addition, SPAR Italy licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.
The DESPAR consortium operates stores in three formats: DESPAR neighborhood supermarkets, EUROSPAR supermarkets, and INTERSPAR hypermarkets.
Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. Independently owned neighborhood supermarkets are a vital part of the organization’s strategy to bring a high-quality, tailored grocery offering to communities.
