Lidl Unveiled as the Most Trustworthy Supermarket in UK

Lidl, the renowned discount supermarket, clinched the title of the most trustworthy supermarket in the UK, recognized by the Ethical Commerce Alliance (ECA). Lidl topped the Retail Trust Index, outperforming its competitors and securing second place in the broader retail sector. Lidl also recently won recognition as the UK’s most popular supermarket by YouGov and the most cost-effective by Grocer Super 33 rankings.

Lidl GB earned the title of the most trustworthy supermarket on October 9th, surpassing Tesco (ranked 15th) and Aldi (ranked 21st) in the Retail Trust Index. This consumer research, conducted by the ECA, highlighted Lidl’s consistent performance, even as trust in the supermarket industry declined. Tesco and Aldi fell behind, while premium stores like Waitrose and M&S placed 28th and 29th.

Georgina Hall, Head of Communications & CSR at Lidl GB, remarked, “Households have faced volatility, yet Lidl remains committed to providing top-quality, affordable products. Trust and transparency anchor our business, and we’re pleased the Retail Trust Index reflects this.”

During the research period, Lidl GB stood out by ensuring access to high-quality products at affordable prices. Lidl’s recent trading update revealed several initiatives aimed at supporting shoppers, suppliers, and employees:

  1. Lidl invested £100 million to keep customer prices low.
  2. Lidl opened 50 new stores, the most in Great Britain.
  3. Lidl committed £4 billion to British food businesses for FY23.
  4. Lidl increased pay rates twice in eight months, totaling a £50 million investment.
  5. Lidl launched the Good to Give Trustmark, an initiative promoting food donations.
  6. Lidl built the world’s largest distribution center.

Lidl’s dedication to affordability secured its title as the UK’s cheapest supermarket by The Grocer last month. This award complements its recent recognition as the most trustworthy supermarket by YouGov, where it ranked first in customer opinion.
