Coles and SecondBite Team Up to Help Take the Bite Out of Winter

Winter Appeal for Coles and SecondBite

Today, Coles launched its annual appeal for national food rescue charity SecondBite to help feed Aussies doing it tough this winter. The Coles SecondBite Winter Appeal comes as new research from SecondBite conducted by YouGov shows that over three quarters (76%) of Australians struggle more financially in winter with high electricity or energy bills being the most common cause (57%) followed by South Australia, Victoria and NSW.

From today until Tuesday 30 July, customers can support SecondBite at more than 1,800 supermarkets and Coles Liquor stores nationally by purchasing a $2 donation card at a Coles supermarket or donating at any Vintage Cellars, Liquorland or First Choice Liquor Market store. Donations can also be made via Coles Online.

How to Support SecondBite

This winter there are more ways than ever to support SecondBite at Coles with well-loved brands Chobani, Mount Franklin, Nando’s and the Natural Chip Co also joining the fight and will donate a portion of sales from selected products sold in all Coles supermarkets or on Coles Online towards the appeal.

All funds raised by Coles, its customers and suppliers will enable SecondBite to deliver unsold but edible fruit, vegetables, bread and other grocery staples to over 1,000 charities and community partners across Australia who provide food relief through cooked meals, food hampers and community pantries.

Increased Need for Food Relief

SecondBite CEO Daniel Moorfield said the need for food relief increases during winter so he urged shoppers to purchase a $2 donation card or participating product at Coles to support the appeal.

“This winter sees an even greater demand on those already struggling with their own personal challenges as many vulnerable Australians are forced into making decisions like heating or eating, finding they can no longer balance their budget to cover life’s necessities. The money raised at Coles will help SecondBite meet these additional needs and continue rescuing and delivering healthy food for free through our network of over 1,000 community food partners,” he said.

Coles’ Commitment to the Cause

Coles Chief Operations and Sustainability Officer Matt Swindells said the annual Winter Appeal is a key initiative for Coles to support SecondBite.

“SecondBite has been an incredible partner for us over many years now with local charities and community groups right across Australia including schools, neighborhood houses, domestic violence crisis shelters as well as Indigenous health services all benefiting from their work funded via this association,” he said.

“We’re not just raising money though our partnership goes much deeper than that – it’s about tackling food waste too by saving good quality edible product from ending up in landfill when there are hungry people who could eat it. Since 2011, we have donated more than 250 million meals worth of food to SecondBite after rescuing it from our supermarkets and distribution centres.”

Support from Suppliers

This Winter Appeal sees four supplier partners join forces with Coles – Chobani, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (Mount Franklin), Snack Brands (Natural Chip Co.), and Nando’s. With their invaluable support, along with customers buying participating products or $2 donation cards, we hope to exceed last year’s Winter Appeal fundraising efforts.
