As 2024 begins, Brazil gets ready to harvest robusta coffee while prices soar!

Brazilian farmers are preparing to harvest more robusta coffee this year. Coffee prices are very high in Brazil and the most expensive in London in 16 years.

Brazil is the second largest coffee producer after Vietnam and also leads the production of arabica coffee beans. Robusta coffee tends to be bitter and high in caffeine, while Arabica coffee is milder and more expensive.

With Vietnam’s poor crop and shipping problems in the Red Sea, the price of hard coffee rose. This led European coffee producers to Brazil in search of their robusta, called conilon.

Experts believe Brazil will produce more hard coffee by 2024. They say installation will begin in some regions in April and accelerate through May. They also said that last year there was not much coffee in the warehouses.

Ramon Patrocinio, who helps produce crops in the states of Bahia and Espírito Santo, said the trees look better with more fruit on them. He thinks 20% more coffee will be produced this year.

He also thinks the new coffee will start selling in June or July, after drying.

Enrique Alves in the province of Rondonia said some farmers start collecting before they are paid, but it is better to wait until most beans are ripe.

Experts believe Brazil will produce 22.7 million cases of robusta coffee this year, up from last year.

Some farmers sold their coffee for lower prices last year, so they may not reap all the benefits of higher prices this year.

Patrocinio said more people are growing hardy coffee, especially where the plants can be irrigated.
