Tesco switches to recyclable cardboard packs in place of plastic laundry pod containers.

Tesco will switch to new recyclable cardboard packaging this week in lieu of the plastic tubs that its laundry detergent pods are currently distributed in.
By switching to cards, 252 tonnes of plastic will be saved yearly, as well as more than four million pieces of plastic across eight lines. The box has a thin plastic liner inside to safeguard the pods and is made of more than 90% recycled cardboard. It is also FSC certified. The cardboard box can be placed in the typical domestic recycle bin once it is empty.
More than 24 million people in the UK routinely purchase laundry products, and more than 38% of them already choose pods over powder detergent (28%), liquid detergent (34%), or gel (34%).
Additionally, Tesco is introducing larger pod packs for families that provide even greater value. Three products—bio, non-bio, and scented—will make up the line, which will cost £5.50 for 40 washes.
“Customers are currently focused on getting great value, but we know that they still want to choose goods that use less or no plastic in their packaging,” Tesco Group Quality Director Sarah Bradbury said. This is just one of many adjustments we’re making to eliminate pointless plastic from goods throughout our stores.
This action is a component of Tesco’s 4Rs packaging strategy, which was developed to combat the effects of plastic waste. To put it another way, Tesco recycles what is left after removing plastic where it can and reducing it where it cannot.
Tesco has eliminated 1.8 billion pieces of plastic and reduced packaging by more than 10,000 tonnes since the 4Rs plan was introduced in August 2019.
Fruit juices, chips, and cheese are just a few of the goods that are currently made with less plastic.
