SPAR UK has supported Marie Curie, the UK’s leading end-of-life care charity, since 2017. At the end of 2022, a total of £2.8 million had been donated, with some great work done so far in 2023.

Right across the United Kingdom, SPAR partners and retailers continue to raise funds for Marie Curie, SPAR UK’s national charity.

Go Yellow campaign

SPAR is one of seven local grocery brands donating £35,000 in total to a new campaign, called Go Yellow. The campaign is in support of Marie Curie’s special 75th birthday anniversary. Kellogg’s, Britvic, Pladis, Nestle, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, Pepsico, and SPAR own label took part in the charity campaign, which ran from 20 July until 9 August across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Great Daffodil Appeal

Marie Curie’s largest fundraising campaign, the Great Daffodil Appeal, takes place each year in March. The fundraiser sees thousands of people wear yellow daffodil pins and participate in fundraisers to support the charity. SPAR stores across the UK supported by hosting bake sales, raffles and taking part in challenges.

Special edition cake

In the North of England, regional SPAR wholesaler, James Hall & Co. developed a special Marie Curie cake, on sale to customers in stores until 2 August. From every cake sold, 50p was donated directly to Marie Curie. This initiative was also part of the 75th celebrations for the charity. In a similar initiative, the wholesaler donates to the charity for every sandwich sold in SPAR stores.  Since 2016, over £300,000 has been raised.

Fundraising weekends

In Northern Ireland, SPAR UK regional wholesaler SPAR NI and their Blooming Great Summer Fundraisers for Marie Curie raised over £55,000. The event, which took place in the first weekend in June, included various tea parties, coffee mornings, fancy dress days and fun days for shoppers. So far this year, SPAR NI store teams and shoppers raised an incredible £98,396 for their charity partner, and £798,717 since the partnership began in 2017.

In August, James Hall & Co’s corporate stores division raised over £30,000 through various fundraising initiatives. A Marie Curie fundraiser was also held in July as part of the wholesaler’s weekend social in Leeds, raising £3,060.

In Devon, Ashburton SPAR held two fundraising events – a cake sale and a raffle, raising a total of £1065.00 for Marie Curie. Appleby Westward, owner of Ashburton SPAR and other SPAR stores in the Southwest of England, raised over £8,500.
