SPAR South Africa Advances Fight Against Gender-Based Violence

SPAR South Africa has taken a significant step against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) by becoming a member of the Private Sector Coalition Against Gender-Based Violence and Harassment (PSC). Since 2019, SPAR has been a dedicated advocate for the fight against GBV, focusing on practical solutions to provide timely support to those in need. This new partnership with the PSC, established in September 2024, bolsters SPAR’s commitment, as it joins a collaborative platform where companies work together to tackle workplace violence and gender inequality.

Holistic Initiatives for Support and Awareness

SPAR South Africa’s approach to addressing GBV is multifaceted, encompassing direct community support, educational initiatives, and partnerships with organizations committed to GBV prevention and recovery. One key collaboration is with LifeLine, a support service aiding individuals affected by abuse. SPAR contributes essential food and care packs to Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs), established by South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), and has even funded the creation of a new TCC in rural KwaZulu-Natal. These centers offer holistic support to victims of violence, with a proven 77.8% conviction rate in court cases, significantly above the national average of 3%.

In collaboration with Trulife, SPAR South Africa is also actively involved in GBV education, sending young adults to schools to educate students on gender equality and the impacts of GBV. The goal is to foster awareness and prevention from an early age, empowering students to understand and advocate for gender equality. Additionally, SPAR has launched the Uyinene alarm app on campuses, providing students with a safety tool that can alert authorities in case of danger. To expand outreach, SPAR has printed essential GBV victim information on its shopping bags and created a dedicated GBV URL, ensuring a broad audience can easily access support resources.

Creating a Safe Workplace

Within its own walls, SPAR South Africa has launched an internal support initiative for employees affected by GBV or domestic violence. At the company’s head office, individuals have access to a confidential space to share their experiences and seek support, promoting a culture of compassion and solidarity among colleagues. Training and ongoing awareness align SPAR with the PSC’s three-step framework, which focuses on prevention, protection, and enforcement to create safer workplaces.

A Collective Effort for Real Change

SPAR South Africa’s role in the Private Sector Coalition Against Gender-Based Violence and Harassment marks a significant milestone in its mission to combat GBV. By implementing programs that support victims, educate communities, and foster safe environments, SPAR is setting a powerful example of responsible retailing that extends far beyond business. The company’s commitment to addressing GBVF highlights the positive impact that businesses can have in building safer, more equitable societies.

Through its diverse initiatives and active involvement in the PSC, SPAR South Africa continues to demonstrate that it is not only a leader in retail but also a champion for meaningful social change. As these initiatives evolve, SPAR remains dedicated to driving impactful actions that contribute to a safer future for all.
