SPAR Promotes Local and Sustainable Sourcing Across Network

-

As a part of their business strategy, SPAR South Africa looks out for various local suppliers to provide them with goods that are produced within the local region. This is to ensure they promote local businesses in the region and at the same time assist SPAR in cutting costs when it comes to logistics.

Gran Canaria

They offer support to the locals by having long term relationships with over two hundred producers on the island. They have a strategical partnership with the Agricultural Cooperative Society of San Nicolás to promote the tomato productions from La Aldea. In addition, they buy bananas directly from farmers, to promote local Reineta Apples collaborate with the farmers of Vallesco, and also sources strawberries from Valsequillo.

Croatia

Most of the food items sold under SPAR Croatia are sourced internally. Their promotional campaign “Yes, it’s homemade!” unifies all the producers from Croatia and avails their products to advertise in their region as well as abroad. The “Start it Up Croatia” is another initiative aimed at encouraging manufacturers within the country, and the latest edition set a record for the amount of participants.

Slovenia

They are also keen on the local farming and food produced within the cuisine because they buy inputs from small farms and big brands. Their campaign “Start It Up, Slovenia” contests gives successful recipients of SPAR contracts and seeks to invite them to be contractors, thereby enhancing intelligence.

Denmark

SPAR Denmark is working to enhance its assortment of locally procured products, which resulted in a growth of 10% in sales of Danish products. Danish goods are advertised as affordable, high-quality products, and are therefore marked with the national flag.

South Africa

SPAR South Africa has developed a Rural Hub in Limpopo to assist smaller producers to transition into the formal economy. Through the Supplier Development program, they ensure that all micro and small suppliers are equipped to succeed.

By supporting local businesses, SPAR has dramatically improved the availability of fresh, local products in its stores around the globe. SPAR`s sourcing initiatives demonstrate responsibility towards retail, and shows their commitment to the community.
