Regional SPAR Italy retailer Maiora (DESPAR Centro-Sud) has renewed its partnership with Legambiente, the Italian environmental association. The announcement was made in conjunction with the launch of 100% biodegradable and compostable organic shopping bags, which feature information supporting the organization’s sea turtle recovery centers in the country’s center-south and its turtle care activities.
The organic shopping bags are offered to SPAR customers in all of Maiora’s stores, and they promote environmental sustainability and the protection of endangered species.

Marketing “Tartalove”
In this way, Maiora contributes to Legambiente’s ‘Tartalove’ project, which aims to protect the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtle, which faces extinction due to commercial fishing, maritime traffic, and pollution. Plastic pollution is one of the leading causes of mortality among Mediterranean Sea sea turtles. The turtle recovery centers of Legambiente have documented that over fifty percent of sea turtles have consumed various types of plastic, including bags, bottle and dish remnants, cotton buds, fishing lines, and packaging.

“Environmental issues are becoming increasingly relevant in everyday life,” explained Grazia de Gennaro, Head of the Communications Office at Maiora, adding that “not only citizens are called upon to play an active role, but also businesses must make a fundamental contribution through simple gestures.”

Maiora has actively promoted environmental and territorial protection for years, involving its employees and consumers through partnerships with qualified environmental non-profit organizations.

About SPAR Italy

SPAR Italy, known locally as DESPAR Italia, was first granted the SPAR brand’s license in 1959. The first store opened in 1960, making SPAR the first partnership of retailers and wholesalers to operate in the country. In addition, SPAR Italy licenses regional partners, all of whom work together to grow the brand across the country.

The DESPAR consortium operates stores in three formats: DESPAR neighborhood supermarkets, EUROSPAR supermarkets, and INTERSPAR hypermarkets. Many of the larger format stores are company-owned, reflecting the scale of investment required. Independently owned neighborhood supermarkets are a vital part of the organization’s strategy to bring a high-quality, tailored grocery offering to communities.
