SPAR’s involvement with sports on a global scale is an essential component of our efforts to practise responsible retailing. SPAR supports sporting endeavours and enthusiasts of all ages and abilities, particularly projects designed to increase the engagement of women in sports.

The Virtual Challenge from SPAR South Africa
At a time when the majority of sporting events were either postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, SPAR introduced the Women’s Virtual Challenge in 2020 as a tribute to South African women’s tenacity and strength. Based on the popularity of the challenge in that year, SPAR South Africa organised the race again in 2021, drawing over 50,000 competitors, and continuing this pattern in 2022. A portion of the entry price was donated by SPAR to neighbourhood organisations that aid victims of gender-based violence and give girls and women access to sanitary products.

SPAR Scotland backs women’s soccer.
Through their collaboration with the Scottish Football Association, SPAR Scotland supports women’s and girls’ football. The organisation will continue to finance the Scottish Women’s National Team until 2023 in addition to promoting women’s football at the grassroots level. With the introduction of the SPAR Future Stars Cup in 2019, the cooperation got underway. 105 schools from throughout Scotland participated in the competition in its first year. With more than 100 schools signing up for the SPAR Future Stars Cup in 2022, participation rates increased and a fun, competitive environment for players of all skill levels was created.

Women’s handball is sponsored by SPAR Switzerland.
Since 2012, SPAR Switzerland has supported the Swiss women’s handball national team and served as the league’s primary partner. The supermarket has developed a special SPAR Handball App that lets users give to a handball sponsorship fund in order to help handball teams around the nation. Through its sponsorship initiatives, SPAR Switzerland has given CHF 200,000 (€193,400) to handball talent around the country over the years. The Swiss handball programme is an excellent illustration of how people from all walks of life may participate in sports by working together as a community.

Women’s football team sponsored by SPAR Gran Canaria SPAR Gran Canaria has reaffirmed its commitment to women’s football by renewing its sponsorship of soccer team CD Femargun for the 2022–2023 campaign. SPAR Gran Canaria firmly supports both the ideals upheld by this club’s athletes and women’s sports in the Canary Islands. These principles emphasise the value of self-control and upholding healthy living practises including regular exercise and a well-balanced diet.

Women’s Indoor Hockey World Cup is supported by SPAR South Africa.
For the first time, the prestigious international competition, presented by SPAR, is taking place outside of Europe. The tournament is from February 5–11, 2023, in Pretoria, South Africa. In the women’s division, the SPAR South Africa squad will participate against 11 other nations. The women’s indoor hockey programme in South Africa has been a bright spot in the sport because to SPAR’s support. Lennie Botha, the team’s head coach, was upbeat about his team’s prospects for the global competition. With great assistance from SPAR, we have enjoyed a fantastic programme for the past eight years, he stated. It has enabled us to create a team that, in our opinion, will proudly represent the nation on the highest level of indoor hockey.

Women’s netball has received consistent backing from SPAR South Africa.
The women’s national netball team has been sponsored by SPAR South Africa for more than 20 years. The sponsorship of SPAR South Africa acknowledges the popularity of this sport in the country and aims to help the national team participate effectively in international events, such as the next World Cup in Cape Town from July 28 to August 6, 2023, where SPAR will serve as an official sponsor.
