Spar Austria collaborates to enhance biodiversity.

SPAR Austria teams up with local farmers and supplier Frutura in Weinviertel to boost biodiversity. Collaborating with potato specialist Dorfinger, they’ve transformed over 10 hectares (equivalent to about 150 tennis courts) into vibrant bee-friendly pastures.

In Weinviertel, potato farmers are using seeds from Frutura’s BioBienenApple project to create nutrient-rich pastures that support thriving bee populations.

This initiative stems from research revealing a 50% decline in Weinviertel’s biodiversity, prompting SPAR Austria’s involvement.

Local seed mixtures, featuring garden marigold, cornflower, and 40+ native plants, foster an improved habitat for bees and other regional species.

Markus Kaser, SPAR Austria board member, emphasizes the project’s benefits: ‘Farmers see biodiversity as crucial for sustainable yields, ensuring healthy soil and stable harvests for years.’

Highlighting its dedication, SPAR Austria established a Bee Council in 2021 to protect bee populations. Their ‘Let’s preserve diversity together initiative’ and annual Diversity Awards encourage high school graduates to explore biodiversity topics, promoting conservation efforts.

SPAR International collaborates with SPAR country organizations in six key areas of responsible retailing—health, sourcing, community, environment, supply chain, and people—tailoring initiatives to local needs while upholding global commitments.”
