SIG Inaugurates New Aseptic Carton Plant In India

The global leader in aseptic packaging, SIG, has inaugurated a new production facility in India. This unlocks new expansion opportunities for the company. The plant that was built in Ahmedabad, Gujarat during the last 20 months at an investment of 90 million euros, is a clear showcase of what the company intends to achieve in the Indian market.

With the new facility, SIG’s total capacity for producing aseptic carton packs will rise to four billion a year. This fulfills the escalating demand from the dairy and beverage industries. The company has also created more than 300 job opportunities that have aided the economic growth of the region. In addition, the new facility was constructed with strict environmental standards, incorporating energy efficient workflows and materials that aid in lowering carbon emissions.

There is a surge in the market for packaging in India, especially for food and beverages that need to be stored for long periods of time. This is largely driven by India being the number one producer of milk as well as a large juice producing nation. However, in order to maintain the products freshness, innovative packaging and storage solutions are needed. Currently less than 10% of milk produced in India is packaged, revealing the untapped potential this market holds.

SIG’s investment further executes its strategy of improving supply chain efficiency while digitally supporting local manufacturers with advanced packaging systems. The plant will improve the supply chains, decrease dependence on imports, and enable more flexibility in the design of the packages to cater to local tastes.

Alongside the first tranche of investment, SIG has allocated an additional €50 million for a local extrusion line, which is expected to be completed by 2027. This move will enhance the company’s ability to provide sustainable, and high quality packaging solutions to Indian market.

SIG CEO Samuel Sigrist restated the companies committment towards innovation and sustainability by emphasizing the importance of the Ahmedabad plant in addressing India’s increasing need for cutting edge modern design packaging. It highlights the reason why the launch event was graced by Swiss State Secretary for Economic Affairs Helene Budliger Artieda, which shows how this step is important at a global level.
