SBTN Unveils First Ocean Science-Based Targets for Seafood

-

The Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) has launched the first-ever ocean science-based targets for seafood at the Seafood Expo North America. This marks a major step in environmental action, adding oceans to SBTN’s existing targets for land and freshwater.

Why These Targets Matter

  • The ocean is the planet’s largest carbon sink and plays a key role in climate stability.
  • Overfishing and habitat destruction threaten marine ecosystems and the global seafood industry.
  • Companies need stronger sustainability measures beyond traditional commitments.

What the New Targets Cover

These targets give seafood companies a clear, science-backed framework to improve sustainability and protect the ocean.

1. Stop Overfishing

  • Avoid seafood from overexploited fish stocks.
  • Support sustainable fisheries to improve ocean health.

2. Protect Marine Habitats

  • Reduce harm to coastal and deep-sea ecosystems.
  • Implement better farming and fishing practices.

3. Reduce Threats to Marine Wildlife

  • Minimize impact on endangered species from fishing and aquaculture.

Who’s Behind It?

Developed by WWF and Conservation International, with support from major sustainability groups like the Marine Stewardship Council and The Nature Conservancy.

How Businesses Can Get Involved

  • Companies can now register interest in setting targets.
  • A launch webinar on March 25 will explain the process.

This initiative pushes the seafood industry towards stronger environmental action and long-term sustainability.
