Sainsbury’s donates 1 million+ meals through FareShare for the Coronation Food Project.
Sainsbury’s, along with its suppliers Greencore and Cranswick, is giving away over one million fresh meals this winter. This effort is part of a new partnership with FareShare, a charity working to tackle food waste and support communities in need.
The goal of this partnership, which is a part of the Coronation Food Project led by King Charles, is to combat the growing problem of food insecurity in the UK.
Sainsbury’s is donating these meals through two of its fresh food suppliers, Greencore and Cranswick. These meals will be distributed by FareShare to families and individuals facing difficulties during the winter season.
This donation kicks off FareShare’s Alliance Manufacturing program, where Sainsbury’s and the food industry will collaborate to use surplus resources like food, packaging, labor, and capacity to create more nutritious food for those in need.
Sainsbury’s is building upon its existing efforts to combat food poverty during Christmas by redistributing surplus food from its stores through Neighbourly. They’re also fundraising for Comic Relief and aim to raise £3 million through various activities.
Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s CEO, emphasizes their commitment to supporting communities facing food insecurities. He highlights their collaboration with suppliers to find new ways to use surplus resources for those in need.
FareShare’s CEO, George Wright, expresses gratitude for the support from retailers and manufacturers in tackling food waste and providing more food to charities and community groups across the UK.
Greencore and Cranswick CEOs also share their excitement about joining forces with Sainsbury’s and FareShare to provide meals and support to those in need during the winter.
The Coronation Food Project, driven by the Prince of Wales Charitable Fund and inspired by King Charles III, aims to unite the food industry to reduce waste and increase the distribution of surplus food to those who need it most.
Sainsbury’s, a founding member of FareShare, collaborates with them to redistribute surplus food to thousands of charities and community projects across the UK.
*Note: More than one million meals or meal equivalents will be donated. Additionally, fundraising activities are ongoing to support charity efforts.
