Purina Europe Individually Contemplating on Rome and Broader Europe Agriculture Partnerships

Purina Europe is making moves to achieve its dedication to sustainability by deepening partnerships that foster regenerative agriculture. Since 2020, Purina’s supported initiatives aimed at restoring soil health, enhancing biodiversity, and improving water systems over 450 farmers have joined.

To accomplish this, the company set ambitious targets of sourcing 20% of their key ingredients from farms who practice regenerative farming by 2025, which will increase to 50% by 2030. This is also part of Purina’s strategic goal to further reduce environmental impact and at the same time deliver quality pet nutrition.

In France, Purina collaborated with the Earthworm Foundation and in 2021 launched the “Sols Vivants” program as the first pet food company in that country to do so. This program has – so far – trained and supported 250 cereal producers towards adopting regenerative practices and it has the goal of expanding this further.

Moreover, Purina is also working with the LENs system Landscape Enterprise Networks, cooperating with other businesses and interested parties to apply nature based approaches across other European markets. In the UK, projects have already been led by companies such as Nestle UK and Nestle Cereal Partners UK along with Anglian Water with the focus on soil health, greenhouse gas reduction, and water resilience. And more than 110 farmers are involved in 2024.

As with these efforts, similar ones are being done in Italy, Hungary, and Poland where Purina seeks to connect businesses and communities along with local stakeholders to preserve and regenerate rural areas.

For example, in Italian territory, 57 farmers are being engaged through collaborations with Consorzio Prosecco DOC and Leone Alato since 2022. In Hungary and Poland, 22 and 24 farmers, respectively, became a part of LENs programs in 2023, targeting natural and ecosystem service preservation.

Cécile Doinel, Head of Regenerative Agriculture for Purina Europe, gave remarks on the necessity of aiding farmers to adopt regenerative methods for optimum environmental impact and resilience in ingredient sourcing.

These initiatives show the commitment of Purina Europe towards sustainable agriculture and further enhancing the regenerative food systems.
