LIDL GB EXPANSION CONTINUES AT PACE WITH THE OPENING OF THE 900TH STORE IN LIVERPOOL

In Liverpool, Lidl launches its 900th British location, and it will have 1,100 by the end of 2025.
With six shop openings through January, growth kept up its pace and generated close to 250 employment.
For the second year in a row, the discounter was the brick-and-mortar shop with the fastest holiday sales growth. 19 January 2022: Today, Lidl GB announced the opening of its 900th shop in the United Kingdom, which will do so tomorrow. The discounter’s 900th store, which is situated on Edge Lane close to Liverpool’s city centre, has added 40 new employment to the area and will join five more stores that will open in January and together will provide approximately 250 new jobs. Newcastle, Shipley, Merry Hill, and two new outlets in London’s Heston and St. Mary Cray are among the further openings.

From March 1, employees at the new Lidl in Liverpool will get an hourly wage of £10.10, which is greater than the government’s “National Living Wage” and places them among the top paid in the grocery industry.

The supermarket has launched more than 50 additional locations in the past year alone, furthering its goal of 1,100 outlets by the end of 2025 in Great Britain. With sales increasing +2.6% YoY and +21% over a two-year period, the discounter was just named the fastest-growing bricks and mortar store over the Christmas season[1].

Christian Härtnagel, the outgoing CEO of Lidl GB who will soon be replaced by Ryan McDonnell, said: “As my tenure at Lidl GB draws to a close, I have been reflecting on our accomplishments over the previous five years. We have opened more than 240 stores and seven distribution centres since I was appointed in 2016, generating thousands of new employment for the UK economy. We are still on schedule to create 1,100 stores by the end of 2025, and the inauguration of our 900th store serves as a reminder of our aspirational goals and dedication to the United Kingdom.

“At this time, I’d want to express my gratitude to all of my Lidl coworkers for their commitment and perseverance, especially in light of the trying circumstances of the previous two years. We anticipate extending our doors to other areas around the nation in the upcoming months and years as our expansion picks up speed, providing top quality at the lowest prices for even more families.

Lidl has promised to invest £1.3 billion in its store growth over the course of 2021 and 2022 as part of its ongoing initiatives. The discounter’s Feed It Back programme, run in collaboration with Neighbourly, will also benefit all new stores. In 2020 and 2021, Feed It Back donated 2.7 million meals to regional charitable organisations.
