Independent SPAR Retailers in Belgium Invest in Modernization

Independent retailers Rudi Meeus and the Van der Poel family have undertaken extensive modernization efforts to enhance the shopping experience at their SPAR Supermarkets in Belgium. These supermarkets operate under the SPAR Retail Partners Colruyt license and aim to provide greater convenience to their local communities.

SPAR in Tielt-Winge: Following a comprehensive renovation, the SPAR Supermarket in Tielt-Winge, Belgium, now boasts a modern and eco-friendly design. The store, which initially opened its doors 16 years ago, has been transformed to align with the latest SPAR Supermarket style. Rudi Meeus, the independent retailer, and his team have placed a renewed emphasis on offering a wide range of fresh, high-quality products. Some team members have been part of the store since its inception.

The revamped store, which briefly closed for renovations, has emerged as a cutting-edge and environmentally conscious shopping destination. Its updated design prioritizes convenience and sustainability, aligning with Colruyt’s environmental and energy standards. The store layout is spacious and open, enhancing the overall shopping experience. Notably, there is an expanded fruit and vegetable section and an efficient checkout area. In a commitment to sustainability, energy-efficient cooling units have been installed.

This SPAR Supermarket now offers an extensive and diverse product range catering to daily shopping needs and special occasions. From authentic specialties like Limousin beef to the finest regional products, the butchery section includes an open refrigerated cabinet for convenient selection of meat, charcuterie, and freshly prepared items. A unique packing system ensures charcuterie freshness for up to a week, with a focus on products suitable for small households. The store also features a variety of locally sourced products, including a selection of wines. To enhance customer service and expand the wine range, two colleagues are currently undergoing sommelier training.

SPAR in Lichtaart: Following a three-week remodeling period, the SPAR Supermarket in Lichtaart celebrated its grand reopening during a festive event that attracted the community. This store now showcases the latest SPAR Supermarket style, with a strong emphasis on offering fresh and locally sourced products. During the reopening event, customers enjoyed special discounts, snacks, drinks, music, and even received a historical book about the town of Kasterlee, further fostering community ties.

The renovation has expanded the retail space at the SPAR Supermarket by 250 square meters, allowing for a broader selection of cold meats, cheese, fresh fruits, and vegetables. The bakery section has also been enlarged, and a unique ‘Taste Bar’ now offers delicious salads, pizzas, and freshly squeezed juices made onsite, enhancing the overall shopping experience. Furthermore, the SPAR Supermarket in Lichtaart has extended its opening hours to increase convenience for customers. Recognizing the evolving needs of shoppers, the store has added electric car charging stations and a covered bicycle parking area.

The Van der Poel family has a rich history in the grocery business, dating back to 1961 when Martha Roes began assisting her mother in running a grocery shop at the age of 14. Martha eventually took over the shop in 1969. In 1996, her son Luc assumed ownership of the SPAR store near Lichtaart’s church. Guy joined the family business in 2010, and by 2011, the current SPAR store had opened its doors. In 2021, they celebrated three significant milestones: 10 years since the new SPAR’s opening, 25 years of a SPAR shop in Lichtaart, and 60 years of Martha’s dedicated involvement in the business.

The store’s dedicated team comprises around 20 permanent employees, along with some flexi-jobbers and students. Luc and Guy work seamlessly together, with Martha serving as their experienced right-hand person. Since 2019, they have named their own label for the shop’s fresh produce “Martha’s,” known for its freshness and quality. The revamped supermarket continues to prioritize Martha’s own label, offering an expanded selection of fresh and locally sourced products.
