EDEKA’s Sustainable Supermarket in Braunschweig

-

EDEKA Constructs Supermarket With Sustainability as a Design Principle

Braunschweig is set to welcome the world’s first supermarket constructed from recyclable wood by EDEKA. The store aims to employ green construction technologies with the mounting TRIQBRIQ wood block building system.

Innovative Construction Techniques

Innovation and creativity work hand in hand with EDEKA’s preferred style of get it built. BRIQs are modular blocks made of deconstructed and recycled wood without the use of glue or any other synthetic bonding agents. EDEKA’s benefits from this innovative method of construction is that it produces roughly 50% less CO2 than conventional building approaches, which matches perfectly with EDEKA’s sustainability goals.

EDEKA takes an active approach in relation to the environment by implementing a photovoltaic system alongside a comprehensive energy management system. This system can monitor and control the energy expenditures which leads to reduced energy consumption by the store. Not only is the carbon footprint of the store lessened, but the flexibility of the designs in the wooden structure also allows for greater alterations to be made in the future which enhances the sustainability and longevity of the building.

Impacts on the Community & Economy

Through the employment of local residents, EDEKA contributes to the local economy. The proprietor, Popko Andreas, has been with EDEKA for more than ten years and has opened a new store which, along with his focus on sustainable development, represents his long-standing commitment to the EDEKA brand. Regional suppliers who appreciate sustainability in the products they offer to the supermarket have strengthened the philosophy of the supermarket.

The business model’s pioneering vision is the potential for international expansion which serves as a yardstick for other German and foreign supermarkets. Even the start of the retailer’s activities in the store is an achievement in ecological retail architecture, and a milestone for EDEKA – as an innovator and a marketer that is actively engaged in green and sustainable initiatives.

Final Thoughts

By opening their new recyclable wooden store in the city of Braunschweig, EDEKA has set the standard for the future construction of supermarkets, paving the path towards a new technological evolution. This example indicates, along with modern EDEKA’s environmental initiatives, efforts to improve regional economies and showcase a new perspective on sustainability in retail business.
