Digital innovations in theory and practise: EDEKA headquarters partners with the University of Hamburg Department of Business Administration.

In the not-too-distant future, the EDEKA corporate headquarters in Hamburg will lend its support to a wide variety of research projects as well as educational programmes that are run by the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of Hamburg. Together with the “Information Systems and Digital Innovation” professorship, EDEKA, together with its IT subsidiary EDEKA DIGITAL, is now enabling new focal points for digital innovations in retail and purchasing. These new points of focus will be in the field of information technology. Since the beginning of this year, we have been working in conjunction with the professorship that is headed by Prof. Dr. Jan Recker.

Theory meets practice

Over the course of the past few years, EDEKA DIGITAL and the University of Hamburg have already put their partnership to the test by hosting a number of guest lecturers. The responses were uniformly favourable, and as a result, getting familiar with digital innovations in practise will now be incorporated beginning with the summer semester that will follow, and will consequently become an essential component of the variety of courses. A joint sustainable Innovation Challenge, guest lectures, and an expansion of the supervision options for theses and project theses are some of the new additions that have been made to the range of available courses. In addition, EDEKA DIGITAL is happy to provide students who are interested with opportunities for internships or positions as working students.

The focus is on the students

EDEKA DIGITAL is doing its part to alleviate the skills gap that exists in the information technology sector by, among other things, giving young talent more exposure. Students will have access to new focal points in their education as a direct result of the collaboration. Experience can be gained in the areas of focus, which include sustainable development, the digitization of products and services, digital innovation, and the challenge of transformation in large organisations. Digital business models, digital innovation, and the challenge of transformation in large organisations are covered through a combination of theory and practise. Therefore, additional funding opportunities are made available to students and (post-)doctoral students who are particularly qualified.

About EDEKA DIGITAL

EDEKA DIGITAL GmbH, also known as EDDI for short, is an information technology subsidiary of EDEKA headquarters that is tasked with the responsibility of successfully dovetailing the business processes of the medium-sized and cooperative EDEKA network. This is accomplished through the successful interaction of three stages: independent retail, regional wholesale, and EDEKA headquarters. The EDDI team has more than 600 employees across Hamburg, Mannheim, Berlin, and Cluj (Romania), and they combine in-depth expertise in information technology with comprehensive retail industry knowledge. In this way, EDDI not only actively shapes and develops the digital transformation of the EDEKA network, but it is also an essential component in the retail industry’s continued expansion and success.
