Ambarella Chosen Samsung Electronics’ World-Class 5nm Technology for New Automotive AI Central Domain Controller

Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) applications are advanced by the new CV3-AD685 System-on-Chip, which offers a single-chip solution for multi-sensor fusion and path planning.

Ambarella, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMBA), an edge AI semiconductor company, and Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today that Ambarella will use Samsung’s Foundry business’ 5-nanometer (nm) process technology for its recently unveiled CV3-AD685 automotive AI central domain controller.

By this collaboration, new levels of AI processing performance, power, and reliability will be introduced, which will assist revolutionise the safety systems for the following generation of autonomous driving vehicles.

Ambarella’s CV3-AD series of automotive AI central domain controllers includes the CV3-AD685, which is the first version to be released.

Tier-1 automotive suppliers have announced that they will offer solutions utilising the CV3-AD system-on-chip (SoC) product family. With very strict process controls, cutting-edge IP, and great traceability, Samsung’s 5nm process technology is tailored for automotive-grade semiconductors.

Ambarella will rely on the proven track record of the technology and the maturity of Samsung’s 5nm manufacturing. With the help of this 5nm technology, manufacturers will be able to build ground-breaking breakthroughs in aided and automated mobility thanks to the company’s considerable experience in developing automotive foundry processes, intellectual property, and service packages.

Fermi Wang, president and CEO of Ambarella, said, “Ambarella and Samsung Foundry have a long history of working together, and we are thrilled to introduce their world-class 5nm expertise to our new CV3-AD685 SoCs.

“We are able to deliver new levels of AI acceleration, systems integration, and power economy to ADAS and L2+ through L4 autonomous vehicles thanks to Samsung’s proven automotive process technology.”

The CV3-AD685 has Ambarella’s cutting-edge CVflow® AI engine, which features 20 times faster neural network processing than the company’s CV2 SoCs. In order to achieve the total performance needed for processing the entire autonomous driving (AD) stack, including computer vision, 4D imaging radar, deep sensor fusion, and path planning, it also offers general-vector and neural-vector processing capabilities.

According to Sang-Pil Sim, Executive Vice President and Head of Foundry Corporate Strategy at Samsung Electronics, “Samsung offers 5nm EUV FinFET technology to automotive applications for unmatched ADAS and vision processing performance.”

We predict that other car firms will take into account employing the Ambarella CV3-AD SoC product line produced in Samsung’s 5nm process because Tier-1 automotive suppliers have already adopted the technology.

Its SoC includes powerful image processing, a dense stereo and optical flow engine, ARM® Cortex® A78AE and R52 CPUs, an automotive GPU for visualisations, and a hardware security module.

The CV3-AD685 will be the first member of the CV3-AD product line to employ Samsung’s 5nm manufacturing (HSM). It features an “algorithm first” architecture that provides support for the entire autonomous-driving software stack.

A variety of options for aided driving are complemented by the high-performance, power-efficient, and scalable CV3-AD family, which is designed exclusively for ADAS and advances vehicle automation.

Information from numerous sensors can be combined for reliable L2+ to L4 autonomous driving thanks to the integrated CV3-AD685 SoC. Many of the most cutting-edge mobile, HPC, and automotive solutions are powered by Samsung Foundry’s market-leading process technology and advanced 3D packaging solutions.

The Samsung Advanced Foundry Ecosystem (SAFETM) programme is another supporter of Samsung’s 5nm manufacturing process.

In order to deliver solid SoC designs based on certified key design components, including Process Design Kits (PDK), reference flows with Design Methodologies (DM), a variety of Intellectual Properties (IP), and on-demand design support, Samsung Foundry, ecosystem partners, and customers work closely together as part of the SAFETM programme.
