Join the global fight against food waste with the Coalition of Action on Food Waste by Consumer Goods Forum, including ALDI SOUTH. Learn how we tackle a pressing issue affecting economies, hunger, and the environment.

The Coalition of Action on Food Waste was first established in June 2020 by the Consumer Goods Forum. This international group includes more than 400 members from the manufacturing and retail industries.

This partnership was formed to address the complex problem of food waste and loss that occurs on a global scale. Approximately one-third of the total food produced worldwide is lost or wasted yearly, which amounts to a staggering 1.3 billion tons of food valued at about US$1.3 trillion. Food waste is not only responsible for economic losses and exacerbating the problem of world hunger, but it also contributes to increasing emissions of greenhouse gases and a drain on essential resources such as water and energy.

One of the targets of the 12th Goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on Responsible Production and Consumption, is to halve the amount of food that is wasted globally (per capita) at the retail and consumer levels and decrease food losses throughout the production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses, by the year 2030. This particular target is part of the larger goal of reducing food waste. The Coalition of Action on Food Waste, part of the Consumer Goods Forum, has committed to actively helping achieve this goal.

Its goal is to provide transparency on a national, regional, and global scale regarding food waste and to develop new solutions to reduce the amount of garbage. Measuring the amount of food waste produced by ALDI and the other firms that are members of the Coalition, forming relationships with food providers, and working together with other businesses that are members of the Coalition to reduce the amount of food waste produced by their operations are the activities that have been conducted. In addition, they are making efforts to develop solutions that would assist customers in reducing the amount of wasted food.
