A.P. Moller – Maersk broadens its range of warehouse services for UK clients.

April 12, 2023

A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk), headquartered in Liverpool, is expanding its network of warehouses located throughout the United Kingdom. In addition to its warehouses in Doncaster, Tamworth, and Kettering, Maersk has acquired a lease for a facility at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway that is around 685,000 square feet (approximately 63,000 square metres) in size.

The newly constructed facility will be finished in June of 2023 and is a component of a 700-acre development that is being undertaken by the real estate business SEGRO, which is based in the UK. The logistics park is home to the first inland freeport in the United Kingdom, in addition to a Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) that spans 50 acres and provides direct rail connectivity to the seaports of Felixstowe, London Gateway, and Southampton. This will result in a large increase in the rate at which cargo flows, as well as a reduction in the amount of on-road freight mileage and, as a consequence, emissions from hinterland transportation. The structure of the warehouse itself is built to comply with regulations for low or very low embodied greenhouse gas emissions as well as low or very low operating emissions. It will make great use of recycled construction materials and will contain a PV array that is installed entirely on the roof. In addition to this, preparations will be made for the operation of a heavy-duty vehicle fleet comprised entirely of electric cars. Maersk is considering the deployment of a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs) to manage not only the entirety of the company’s internal traffic between the rail terminal, the warehouse, and the depot, but also the last deliveries of freight in the area immediately surrounding the Logistics Park.

The East Midlands Gateway campus is the model for maximising the connection and adaptability of supply chains, and it is a superb example of such a model. Not only does it have an excellent location in the United Kingdom, but the huge infrastructure and cutting-edge technology that is spread out over the site enables activities to be conducted on British soil from a single location in the greenest and most efficient manner. Integrating logistics and achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2040 are two of the most important goals that Maersk has for the future, and this project exemplifies both of those goals.

Head of Logistics and Services Products for the United Kingdom and Ireland is Paul Woolass.
As a logistics integrator, Maersk is working to create and provide a variety of solutions. These solutions include ocean transportation, landside and air transportation, contract logistics such as warehousing and distribution (W&D) and depots, custom clearances, visibility solutions, and more. The integrated supply chain solutions enable Maersk to have better control over the movement of the cargo of its clients at many points of the route. As a result, the supply chains gain both resilience and flexibility as a result of the implementation of these solutions.

Maersk is further strengthening its position by delivering a wider range of services to its clients through the expansion of its contract logistics facilities. This allows Maersk to better meet the needs of its customers. Today, Maersk provides its clients with comprehensive logistics solutions in more than 450 warehouses located in more than 100 countries, with a total space of approximately 76.4 million square feet. (7.1 million sqm). In the years 2023 and 2024, Maersk intends to put into operation not one but several more warehouses located across Europe.
