Lidl extends Tailwind into land transport! Lidl, the German retailer, has broadened its Tailwind brand’s horizons into overland logistics with the establishment of a new unit, Tailwind Intermodal.
Lidl extends Tailwind into land transport
The company announced, “As a sibling company of Tailwind Shipping Lines, it will oversee and manage the inland transportation of goods arriving at the seaport of Koper in Slovenia.”
“Koper holds strategic significance for Tailwind as its ships bring goods via the Panda Express liner service from China. Tailwind Intermodal handles the onward carriage to the hinterland and the return of empty containers to the port.”
Tailwind collaborates with partners to transport goods, offering up to five daily train connections to the multimodal cargo centre in Graz, Austria.
“Due to its geographical position between the Adriatic and the Baltic States, the cargo centre serves as an excellent link to Eastern Europe,” the company added.
By expanding its operations in Koper and Styria, Tailwind aims to “enhance the efficiency of supply chains between China and Europe by integrating sea freight and onshore carriage as a neutral service provider,” the company asserted.
In April 2022, Lidl established its ocean freight operation to exert more control over its shipping needs and navigate supply chain challenges and high container shipping costs more effectively.
While other retail chains scaled back from chartering ships themselves as the COVID pandemic subsided, Lidl doubled down. Data from Linerlytica, an Asia-based box analyst, now reveals that Tailwind is the fastest-growing box carrier globally, experiencing a 43% increase since last July.
The ‘Tailwind’ effect is evident in the throughput at the port of Koper, which recorded record container volumes last year: just over one million TEU, marking a 5% increase compared to 2022.
