SPAR Spain, which has a store on Gran Canaria, was one of the main sponsors of the Gran Canaria Me Gusta Fair for the eighth year in a row. This fair is one of the biggest events that focuses on local food. The fair was held at the Infecar Exhibition Centre from April 21 to 23.

SPAR Gran Canaria once again helped the primary sector by putting on a new show where local food was the main attraction.

The event was called “From the Tree to Your Table,” and guests could buy tomatoes, papayas, lettuce, potatoes, carrots, white cabbage, zucchini, and cucumbers from different farms on the island at special prices. Also, people who bought something at the stand got a gift for helping the island’s main sector.

Committed to supporting the primary sector

SPAR Gran Canaria has been in business for 37 years, and during that time it has always worked to protect and promote locally grown food by renewing significant agreements. One such deal is the La Aldea tomato agreement, which was just renewed for the third year in a row in March of this past year.

In addition to this, they have a contract in place to buy potatoes, which will be in its 14th iteration this year. Regarding produce, there is the Telde orange agreement, which will be signed for the eleventh year in a row, and the Valleseco apple agreement, which was inked the previous year. Both of these agreements will be renewed.

In a similar vein, SPAR Gran Canaria takes pride in the tight relationship it maintains with more than 200 local farmers and stockbreeders, with whom it collaborates hand in hand to encourage the consumption of locally grown produce. Local farmers are able to cultivate their property with the assistance of SPAR, which guarantees sales of the crops the farmers produce. This assistance is an additional demonstration of sustainability, commitment, and responsibility with regard to the Canary Islands.

Healthy eating workshops for children

In addition, SPAR Gran Canaria was responsible for organizing the children’s workshops and two gastronomic shows, both of which have become annual traditions. In addition, it served as the authorized food provider for each and every one of these workshops.

The exercise introduced the younger guests to the concept of a nutritious diet, which is centered on the consumption of fresh seasonal fruit. One of the sessions was conducted in conjunction with twenty families who are members of the Mi Hijo y Yo Association.

This organization offers support to families whose children have either pervasive developmental disorder or autism spectrum disorder. Aurora Ruz, the victor of the eighth season of Masterchef Junior, and Alejandro de la Nuez, the executive chef of the Santa Monica Suites, were in charge of the workshops at this particular event.

Tastings and gastronomic exhibitions

On Saturday and Sunday, a number of different samples of locally produced goods were held at the retail chain.

In addition, SPAR Gran Canaria was the sponsor of two culinary shows, both of which were directed by chef Lolo Román and focused on the preparation of local specialties using locally sourced products and fruit.

About SPAR Spain

SPAR Spain was founded in 1959 when a group of wholesalers who wished to join an international organization came together. As a result, the brand became the first voluntary trading chain to be established in Spain.

The head office is in Barcelona. It provides buying, marketing, communications, and brand support to the 13 regional partners. Together, the SPAR operators actively continue the expansion of the brand across the country.
